May 7, 2012April 19, 2012: The University Apartments at Ettrick clubhouse has been renamed L. J. Saunders Center in memory of Larry J. Saunders (Nov. 17, 1950 – Jul. 11, 2011). Larry J. Saunders, late husband of Delores E. Archer and late father or Barry W. Moore, graduated from Virginia State University (VSU) with a BS degree in Accounting in 1974.
After working for Peat Marwick and Mitchell, Mr. Saunders entered a partnership with Williams White and opened a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm, Saunders and White in Roanoke, VA, in 1980. Later, he established another CPA practice, Larry Saunders and Associates CPA, LLC in Richmond, VA and became a leader in minority CPA firms in Richmond and the state.
Mr. Saunders successfully compiled auditable financial statements for the Virginia State University Foundation (VSUF) after a failed attempt by one of the big eight Accounting firms. Mr. Saunders rendered ten years of service as member of the Virginia State University Foundation Board, and six years as its President, and was an avid supporter of VSU regularly sponsoring and participating in VSU’s Annual Golf Classic as well as supporting activities sponsored by the Virginia State University Alumni Association. While on the Board and as President, Mr. Saunders was instrumental in the planning and subsequent construction of the University Apartments at Ettrick, a first-rate housing community serving 500 VSU students.
Mr. Saunders provided pro bono financial services to VSUREF after resigning from the Board and was a dedicated and committed Alumnus that was always eager to serve. He inspired others to aim high and work hard to improve life for VSU students, its faculty and staff. It is fitting and proper that the VSUREF Board recognized posthumously his many contributions to VSUREF and dedicated the clubhouse in his honor.
